The Fugitives (1-5)
Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Friday September 7, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-007
Manacled American deserters of the French Foreign Legion (a tall one, Hooft, and a chubby one, Hugo) flee southward into the jungles of Africa, assuming they’ll do so un-followed, as, to quote Hooft, “guys like us wouldn’t last a minute in the jungle”. Unfortunately, their former superior, Lt. Colonel Staquait, finds their tracks and vows to follow them to the ends of the earth. Meanwhile, Jane teaches the gang to “never judge a book by it’s cover” after a Tantor-selected book about Black Beard proves too scary for the skittish pachyderm. Tarzan rescues Hooft and Hugo from the perils of the jungle (which the schticky duo can’t talk their way out of), and the ex-Legionnaires quickly assimilate into his jungle community, falsely asserting themselves to be “super secret agents”, taking advantage of the resulting hospitality, and hustling the Professor out of the literal shirt off his back. Jane is, of course, suspicious of the parasitic pair and their fantastic stories, so, when Staquait arrives, declaring them “fugitives”, she, against her own metaphor, trusts his uniform, and turns them in. Ultimately, however, as the true nature of their “crime” comes to light, Jane realizes she’s made a terrible mistake, and must re-convince Tarzan (who feels his trust betrayed) of the duo’s worth before Staquait stages a makeshift execution.

Tantor and Jabari instantly bond, but, through a series of coincidences (including Jabari’s insistence that African violets — which Tantor’s eaten for years — are the dietary root of rogue behavior), Tantor comes to believe that he’s responsible for Mbaya’s recent rampage through Tarzan’s protectorate (which he’s somehow managed to sleep through) and retreats into the jungle. Meanwhile, Jane attempts to discover something that Tarzan’s afraid of.

Dr. Robin Doyle returns to the jungle with her nephew Ian, a bookish child with few friends who spends his time collecting butterflies. While Robin and the Professor spend some quality time “spooning”, the task of entertaining Ian falls to Tarzan, whom Ian sees as a much-needed role model. Lacking any other experience, Tarzan fills the day with activities he enjoyed as a child, and it’s not long before the boy’s discarded his formal trappings for a loincloth. None of this sits quite well with Jane, though, who worries about the dangers of a small child swinging recklessly from tree to tree — and what the good doctor will say when she finds out.

Tarzan and the Leopard Men Rebellion (1-16)
Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Thursday September 20, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-020
The Leopard Men attack the treehouse and, rather than retrieving Tarzan (as the gang expects), make off with Jane, and gas the others. Once conscious, Tarzan, Tantor, The Professor, and Terk set off for Opar to rescue her, only to find Queen La, staff-less and at the mercy of a leopard, begging for help. Despite the Professor’s warning, Tarzan intervenes and forges a temporary alliance to free his wife from La’s rebelling minions. After entering the temple through a secret underground entrance, the two discover Jane, blank-eyed, dressed as the Queen, and clutching the staff. La seizes the staff, knocking Jane to the ground, unconscious, and Tarzan carries the latter off as the Queen begins to dematerialize the insurgents as punishment. Jane awakens in the jungle and declares the Leopard Men in need of her help; they wish to become men again, and only the Queen of Opar (a role Jane was kidnapped to assume) can free them. Tarzan and Jane work their way back into the temple as the others create a distraction, and, after several complications (including Tarzan’s assumed death), Jane breaks the staff, restoring the lost Leopard Men, and allowing them to revert to… leopards. Queen La ages into dust, cursing our heroes as she dissolves, but, as we were oft reminded throughout this episode, “appearances can be deceiving”, and we hear her cackle as the staff re-forms.

The new leader leaves with the gorillas to escape the threat of Histah, a giant python that used to terrorize the gorillas when Kala was young. Tarzan and Jane remain at the treehouse, and Jane tells Tarzan that she understands how Tarzan misses his family, as she misses them too.

Suddenly a baby gorilla named Bibi returns to Tarzan with a message that the gorillas are in trouble. Tarzan and Jane follow and find the family trapped in a tar pit, and at the mercy of the giant snake Histah. Tarzan and the Silver Screen (1-22)
Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Thursday September 27, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-038
While playing hide-and-seek, Terk and Tantor spy a band of hunters and rush the news to Tarzan and Jane, who are reading “Frankenstein”, and learning the word “fiction”. These “hunters” turn out to be an early 20th century film crew, filming a movie (“Savage Man”) about a jungle man similar to the Tarzan of popular culture. The movie, a silent picture, stars Stanley Obrowski (the quintessential ‘stuffed shirt’ actor) and Naomi Madison (a silent movie actress à la Clara Bow or an early Mae West with a Brooklyn accent) as his leading lady. Misunderstanding the fictional nature of the movie, Tarzan “saves” Naomi from a staged peril, and is hired by Tom Orman (the film’s astounded director) as stunt man and, later, star, due to the jealous Stanley’s temperament and ineptitude. His pride wounded, an irate Stanley decides to sabotage the movie by setting fire to the film itself — but the film is highly flammable, and the trading post is soon ablaze around him!

Then Jabari says that it was the “All Seeing Elephant” on Mount Indigo that saved Tantor from near death. Tantor doesn’t know what to think, so he goes back to base camp to ask Tarzan, Jane, and Porter whether or not they’d ever heard of the “All Seeing Elephant.” They all tell him no, but say that it’s an interesting idea, though probably not true. Then Tantor accidentally leans on Porter’s experimentation table, causing the chemicals to explode, and another near-death experience for Tantor. Tantor then attributes his safety to the “All Seeing Elephant” and decides to go on a quest to Mount Indigo to meet him. For Tantor’s safety, Tarzan, Jane, Porter, and Terk reluctantly follow. Will Tantor find his “All-Seeing Elephant”?

Tarzan and the New Wave (1-25)
Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Monday October 1, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-039
This episode begins with Jane facing down a black mamba snake, so Tarzan wrestles the snake and thinks that Jane will be pleased. Jane, however, chastises Tarzan a bit because she said she’d been trying to paint a lifelike picture of the snake, and that Tarzan should have an appreciation of the arts.

Then suddenly they hear that a schooner is in trouble, so they all head for the coast. Tarzan swims out to discover that it was Jane’s old friends from the UK, Eleanor, Hazel, Greenley, and her boyfriend Henry. Tarzan helps everyone to escape on a makeshift raft, made from the hatch lid.

In the next scene, we see Jane serving tea to everyone else back at her boat-tree house. Hazel and Eleanor say that they’re there for adventure, but they are not sure why Greenley brought her nerdy boyfriend Henry, except perhaps to make him into a “well rounded” man, like Tarzan. Henry says that he’s there to study earthquakes.

Tarzan proceeds to try to teach Henry how to swing on vines and act more like him, while Henry shows Tarzan his geology machine, and the oboe, which Tarzan is curious about. When Henry plays the oboe, Jane says how much she loves it, which makes Tarzan a bit jealous, while Eleanor and Hazel says it’s “boring.”

Suddenly there are earthquake tremors and a massive earthquake. Tarzan protects Jane in a tree, while Henry tries to protect Greenley, Eleanor, and Hazel. Then once the tremors stop, there is a giant tidal wave, which causes Tarzan to take Jane to higher ground, while Henry and the other girls climb a tree. Then the old row boat/elevator from the treehouse breaks loose, and Henry and Greenley, Eleanor, and Hazel, jump into it from the tree and ride a wave into the jungle.

Henry and the girls think that they’re lost, so Eleanor and Hazel moan that they’re with Henry and not with Tarzan. Greenley then says to follow the debris back to camp.

On their way back, they encounter a rhino, which Henry stops with a rockslide, and a snake, which he charms with his oboe.

As they work together to find their way back to camp, the girls gain a new respect for Henry. Greenley then feels like she really does love Henry, despite what Eleanor and Hazel had said about him being a wimp, and she gives him a big hug in the end.

Jane is touched by Greenley & Henry’s show of affection, and so she tries to hug Tarzan, but he pulls away because he thinks Jane thinks he’s inadequate because he isn’t as well rounded or cultured as Henry. Jane reassures Tarzan that she loves him for the way he is, and he’s well rounded in the places she likes.

Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Monday October 8, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-036

Meanwhile, Tarzan accompanies Basuli on his quest to find an eagle’s feather (from a specific eagle), but a lot of accidents happen along the way. Basuli claims that fate is against them, but Tarzan suspects sabotage. So while they are fighting their way to the eagle’s mountain, Jane is back at the village trying to patch things up between Naoh and the chief. The story is basically about the importance of tradition vs. the importance of one’s personal values, morals and desires.

Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Wednesday October 10, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-034
Following the Proffesor’s latest (unsuccessful) attempts to make tea, he goes to the trading post to try to persuade Dumont to trade something for a box of Earl Grey. Dumont obliges, when Jane persuades him that ‘a good deed can be its own reward’, which Tarzan overhears her saying. As they are about to leave, none other than those less-than-friendly-diamond-miners, Neils and Merkus arrive. They want to search for their lost diamonds, and Tarzan reluctantly allows them on the condition that they leave the gorilla family alone.

While mining, Neils and Merkus are attacked by Tublat, the banished bull-ape enemy of Tarzan and family. However by some lucky turn of fate, the dynamite goes off close to the creature and injures him, and the devious miners decide to cage him and sell him. Tarzan arrives, and tells Neils and Merkus that he doesn’t mind if they take Tublat, or even kill him.

When the gorillas find out that Tublat is gone, they celebrate, but Tarzan feels guilty and leaves them to be by himself. Jane talks to him, and he explains that even though Tublat is his enemy he is going to set him free, because the jungle is his home too and its not fair to take him out of that. Jane is unhappy with his decision, but then he repeats back to her what he heard her say, that ‘a good deed can be its own reward’, and she lets him go. But was it the smart thing to do?

Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Thursday October 11, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-033
Clayton’s sister (or rather her valet, Hobson) kidnaps Jane, Tantor, Terk, and the Professor, placing each in a separate, deadly peril. She then injects Tarzan with a fatal poison (via blowdart) and informs him that the antidote lies far away on a distant mountain she’s dubbed “Clayton’s Peak”. He, therefore, has a choice, she says — to suffer as she had (and lose those he loves) or as Clayton had (and lose his own life).

Tarzan and the Mysterious Visitor (1-35)
Season 1 / Season 1 ~ First Aired: Friday October 12, 2001 / Prod Code: 1C21-041
This is a very interesting episode indeed. It starts off with this frustrated writer, named Ed, who needs to find inspiration. He happens across Dr. Philander’s article about Tarzan possibly being a missing link.

Ed then tracks down Philander in a run-down apartment building/flophouse, and Philander goes on to tell of his adventures in Africa, meeting Tarzan, exploring Pellucidar, being embarrassed by the photos of the baby baboon, etc. (I’m surprised though that he didn’t go on to talk about how he’d captured Maghani, the Silver ape, and almost threw Tarzan overboard after he’d been injured.) Anyway, Ed finds Philander’s story of Pellucidar a bit too unbelievable so he leaves. But a waitress convinces him to at least “check it out”. After all, Philander’s photo features a real guy in a real loincloth surrounded by real apes, doesn’t it?

Ed proceeds to sail to Africa, where he meets up with Hugo and Hooft, who recall their own adventures with Tarzan, escaping the wild animals and their former French Foreign Legion general, etc. They try to paint the picture that Tarzan isn’t much more than a normal guy with long hair.

Disappointedly, Ed goes to Dumont’s trading post and buys a ticket for the next ship home. He then mentions Tarzan to Dumont, who begins to recall some of his adventures and first encounters with Tarzan and family. He also related the rhino story (where the rhinos invade gorilla land because the trading post came, so Tarzan used dynamite to change the rhinos’ course) but he said that he didn’t know how Tarzan ever did use the dynamite he’d sold him.

Ed then wanders through the jungle, looking for Tarzan. Suddenly he encounters a panther, which Tarzan saves him from. Ed can’t believe he’d finally met Tarzan, and they proceed to Tarzan’s tree house.

Ed asks Tarzan if all of the stories of his daring feats are true, which Tarzan affirms. Jane interrupts Ed, and suddenly goes on to say how Tarzan isn’t just a man of action, but also tender hearted and lover of nature…and her. Jane recounts how Tarzan helped her be able to learn to survive in the jungle, and had the most kind heart of any man she’d ever known.

Ed said that the whole story of Tarzan and Jane (and so forth) were an inspiration. He then proceeds to go back to Chicago, and write a semi-fiction novel, titled “Tarzan Of The Apes: By Edgar Rice Boroughs.” (The real author of “Tarzan…” in the first place!?!)
