Jeffrey
Starring: Steven Weber, Michael T. Weiss, Patrick Stewart
Storyline: Jeffrey is going through an anxiety attack about having sex in the age of AIDS. So, he decides that he will no longer have sex, period. But, on the day that he makes this momentous decision, he meets the "perfect" drop dead hunk, nice guy who is way interested in him in -of all places - the gym. After doing a great bench-press set together (and one of the movie's funnier scenes) they share a kiss and a smile. Well, the guy is so perfect that Jeffrey is tempted to forgo his stand on sex (after much needling by his best friend played by a great Patrick "Jean-Luc Picard eat your heart out" Stewart). But, then the real bummer occurs -- the man of his dreams is HIV+.
Review: I liked the trailer of Jeffrey better than the actual movie. Luckily, I rented the film and didn't have to pay top dollar for it. It is a nice film, but it was too play-like (BTW it was adapted from the Off Broadway play of the same name). I generally find plays adapted to movies kind of sketchey and out of sinc with movie-time. The only adapted play to film movie that I really love is Auntie Mame.
Aside from that, the acting was fine. Patrick Stewart stole the show. Then again, I always think Patrick Stewart steals the show -- ok, ok, so I think he's a hot man and that's the big reason why I saw the movie in the first place.
The actor that plays Jeffrey - Steven Weber - is constantly upstaged by Stewart and his love interest Michael T.Weiss who also rates as a babe-o-la with awesome body and great deep voice. Steven Weber is just wimp in comparison and I couldn't understand the attraction. Not only is he a wuss sight-wise, but also stance-wise. He has the hots for Weiss and decides pretty much to go for it until he finds out Weiss is HIV+. I understand being afraid, worried and nervous, but Jeffrey doesn't even talk to Weiss about it. He justs shuts Weiss out, until personal trauma brings him around. If I were Weiss' character, I would tell Jeffrey to stick it. But hey, this is a movie and I digress.
There is a great cameo by Nathan Lane as a Catholic Priest (when Jeffrey remarks that the guy is a man of God and shouldn't be coming on to him, Nathan's reply is to the effect of "Hey, I'm a CATHOLIC priest!") and a pretty lame one by Sigourney Weaver as an over the top sexologist. Basically the flick was dull.
